Battery, Button Cell
Button cell batteries are most typically found in cameras, hearing aid devices and wristwatches. They are small, thin, and round.
This material is hazardous waste and must be disposed of properly. This item cannot be placed with your waste for pickup.

Recycle
These batteries contain hazardous materials. They are accepted at Westchester County's Household Materials Recovery Facility. H-MRF is located on the Grasslands Campus: 15 Woods Road, Valhalla, NY. Schedule a drop-off time here: https://environment.westchestergov.com/h-mrf-reservation

Disposal
You may bring button cell batteries to one of the following stores where they will be disposed of properly: Home Depot, Staples, or CVS. Do not put these batteries in the trash.
Battery, Non-Rechargeable (Alkaline)
These batteries are typically used in toys, radios, remote controls, and flashlights. They are the AAA, AA, C, D, 9-volt, long life C, and long life D cells.

Disposal
These batteries do not contain hazardous chemicals and should be disposed of in the regular trash. (Rechargeable batteries and button batteries are considered hazardous waste and must be disposed of differently.)
Battery, Rechargeable
Rechargeable batteries are commonly found in cordless power tools, cell phones, video cameras, laptop computers, digital cameras, radio-controlled toys, and portable computers. Types include nickel cadmium (Ni-Cd), nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH), lithium ion (Li-ion), and small sealed lead acid.
This material is hazardous waste and must be disposed of properly. This item cannot be placed with your waste for pickup.

Alternatively, you may bring rechargeable batteries to the following locations, where they will be disposed of properly: Home Depot, Staples, or CVS.
Disposal
Most consumer products using rechargeable batteries have been designed to allow easy battery removal for proper disposal and recycling. If the battery cannot be removed, the entire product may be brought to the H-MRF (see "Recycle")

Recycle
Textiles can now be dropped off at Westchester County's Household Materials Recovery Facility (H-MRF) located on the Grasslands Campus, 15 Woods Road, Valhalla, NY. Disposal
These can be disposed of as waste, but the reuse and recycle options above will keep them out of a landfill or incinerator.
Bicycles
Reuse
If in working condition, you could try selling it through Craig's List, or consider posting for free on Freecycle.org. Bike enthusiasts may be interested in Recycle-A-Bicycle, which accepts adult and children's bikes.
Donate your used bicycles to Danny's cycles in Scarsdale. Danny's accepts adult and children's bikes, but there is a greater need for adult bikes.

If unusable, remove non-metal parts and recycle curbside by scheduling a Wednesday special pickup. Make an appointment for pickup here:

Binders, 3-Ring
Reduce/Reuse
If lightly used you can donate to Good Will or Love in Action.
Recycle
Binders must be dissected in order to be recycled. Cut off the metal 3-ring mechanism and place in comingled bin. Extract the cardboard and vinyl from the front and back covers. Vinyl goes in the comingled bin and cardboard in the paper and cardboard bin.
Disposal
Should be recycled. If you cannot take the binder apart, the entire item may be placed with waste.
Books, Hardcover
Reduce/Reuse
If your books are in good condition, there are several options to consider.
The Croton Free Library accepts donations for its yearly book sale. There is a donation bin at the bottom of the library parking lot. No textbooks please. Collection has been suspended during the pandemic but should resume once the library reopens fully.

Better World Books - Sell or recycle. Will pay for shipping. You must get the books to UPS. Check site for details.
Green Textbooks - Accepts textbooks up to 20 years old. Check site for details.
Stuffed Animals for Emergencies (SAFE) - This not-for-profit accepts children's books, stuffed animals, toys, and baby blankets that are clean and in good condition. SAFE delivers them to children in emergency situations or donates them to other children's organizations, military organizations, libraries and nursing homes. This is a mail-in program.
Recycle
The book can be disassembled and the pages recycled in the paper and cardboard bin.Disposal
The covers, bindings, spine, and glue remnants are waste and cannot be recycled.

Place in mixed recycling bin. Must be empty and clean. Metal cap can also be recycled.
