Antarctica - Ice and Millions of Penguins, but No Bears

Hosted by the Saw Mill River Audubon Society. In November 2018, Phil and Ellen Heidelberger traveled with National Geographic and Lindblad to explore the Falklands, South Georgia Island and the Antarctic Peninsula by ship, zodiac, kayak and snowshoes. Come see Phil's images of stunning landscapes of ice, eight species of penguins, Elephant and Leopard Seals, whales and other wildlife and hear stories from their journey.

 

Zoning Update Public Workshop

Harmon Firehouse

The Village is considering updating the zoning for the Municipal Place Gateway (the three retail areas near Maple Street and Municipal Place) and the North Riverside Avenue Corridor with a view to enhancing the vitality of the area. Please attend the workshop at the Harmon Firehouse to learn more about the study that will be conducted, the process behind it, and provide your input.
 

Beloved Community Dinner: How to Have Civil Conversations

Friday, March 22 – 7 PM

Please join the Croton community for a pot luck meal and guided discussion. Based on a model developed by The Rev. Doris Dalton at the MLK Institute in White Plains, these dinners reflect The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision for “Beloved Community, an inclusive and reconciled reality that recognizes and affirms the humanity in each other.” Please bring food to share and your own plate/utensils if possible. Croton Reservoir & Dam Hike

Saturday, March 23 – 10 AM

Croton Gorge Park

Easy 2-mile hike north along the Aqueduct and atop the beautiful Croton Dam.  Meet near the restrooms at the parking lot at Croton Gorge Park, Rte. 129, Cortlandt, NY 10567. The leader of the hike will discuss the history and construction of the Old Croton Aqueduct and the features of the Croton Dam, the trailhead of the Aqueduct Trail.  The Aqueduct was completed in 1842 to supply water to a thirsty New York City. Bring your questions and appetites to Temple Israel's State Legislative Breakfast. State Senator Peter Harckham, Senator David Carlucci, and Assembly Member Sandy Galef will engage in a healthy exchange about the changing legislative landscape. A light breakfast will be served at no charge.

 

Homegrown String Band in Concert

The Homegrown String Band brings an American folk tradition into the 21st century. This family of musicians collaborates to develop an “organically grown” repertoire of original and roots music inspired by the classic sounds of rural America. The Jackofsky family (husband, wife, daughter) trio uses a full palette of instruments – including guitar, banjo, dulcimer, mandolin, banjo ukulele, baritone ukulele, harmonica and doumbek – to take the audience on a musical journey from ancient ballads of the British Isles to contemporary blues and bluegrass.

 

Cupcake Wars!

Saturday, March 30 – 3:30 PM

The Croton Free Library presents Cupcake Wars! A friendly competition where you get a chance to creatively decorate cupcakes in themed categories for grades 3-8. Participants will be coached by Baked by Susana and judged by the Library Teen Advisory Board. Prizes will be awarded. Pre-registration is required.

 

Chili Cook-Off Competition & Fundraiser

Saturday, March 30 – 6 to 9 PM

Croton Yacht Club

Compete for bragging rights for the best chili in Croton! Or just join us for a great meal & support Croton Boy Scout Troop 28. A trophy will be awarded to the first-place winner. Elinore O’Connell Presents Traditional Irish Music with a Touch of Jazz

In the spirit of the Irish seisiún or “session,” Elinore O’Connell and her band of traditional Celtic and jazz musicians offer a warm and lively evening. Listen to tunes played by accomplished local fiddler Sean Roarty and mandolin player Joseph Connolly. Elinore sings Celtic-inspired songs infused with American jazz, featuring bassist John Goldberg and pianist Julio Valenzuela. Elinore, who has made her mark as a jazz and Broadway singer, brings a bit of the Emerald Isle to her home library.

 

Boating Safety & Personal Watercraft Course

Croton Yacht Club

The Croton Yacht Club will be sponsoring a New York State Boating Safety & Personal Watercraft Certification Course on Sunday, March 31st from 9:00 AM – 5:00PM located at 6 Elliott Way in Croton-on-Hudson. The course fee is $60.00 per student. Students must be at least 10 years old to take the course. Pre-registration is suggested by visiting http://www.nyboatingsafety.com. All individuals born on or after 5/1/96 are now required to successfully complete an approved course in boater education in order to operate a motorboat. The required boating safety certificate must be carried by the minor at all times while operating the boat.

 

Sonnet, Piano-Four-Hands Duo

Join the library for an afternoon of piano four-hands music featuring Sonnet with pianists Mi-Won Kim and Bari Mort-Zieff. A program of delightful dances spanning three centuries of musical styles gives a lively welcome to early spring. Pianists Mi-Won Kim and Bari Mort each received their Master of Music degrees from the Juilliard School in Manhattan. Originally from Korea and New York respectively, they have successfully merged their inherently different origins and perspectives into a musical meeting of the minds.

 

Croton Point Avenue Project Improvement Meeting

Tuesday, April 2 – 7:30 PM

Stanley H. Kellerhouse Municipal Building

All commuters and residents are invited to attend this public meeting to learn more about the Croton Point Avenue Traffic, Pedestrian, and Bicycle Improvement Project, and how it will affect traveling to and from the Croton-Harmon Train Station this year.
