Officer Profile: Officer Terance Yant

Before joining the force on March 21, Officer Yant  worked as an officer for the Village of New Paltz Police Department for five years. He chose to apply for the position in Croton because he appreciates the community policing approach of the Croton department and the opportunity to work closely with and get to know village residents. Officer Yant says he has always wanted to be a police officer and believes it's his calling. He enjoys helping people, especially helping to solve problems. If someone has the ability to help others, that is what they should do, he explains. 
Although his mother was apprehensive at first about the dangers· inherent in policing, his family is proud he is serving the community. 
Before beginning his career as an officer, he worked with his mother at her daycare center for several years, which helped foster his love of children. 
Officer Yant attended Dutchess Community College before transferring to Sacramento (Calif.) City College where he studied liberal arts. He returned to New York to pursue a career in law enforcement. 

Officer Yant finds Croton to be a friendly community and feels very welcome here. In discussing his philosophy, he said he is a firm proponent of community policing. He sees himself as a resource to the community and has found that problems can often be solved through conversation. He enjoys interacting with people and tries to treat others as he would want to be treated.
