Office Profile: Sgt. Thomas J. Leonard

Sergeant Leonard

Sergeant Leonard has been in law enforcement for over 15 years. He has been with the Village of Croton’s police department since 2013.  Prior to joining CPD he was with the Dutchess County Sheriffs Dept. and the City of Mt. Vernon. He is a graduate of the Dutchess County Police Academy.

TJ explains that since the village is a smaller municipality than his previous jobs community policing is vital.  His background allows him to recognize the importance of developing a bond with our fellow residents, and quite frankly is easier in a quieter spot such as Croton. He said that Croton PD is “ much more community focused” that his previous assignments.

During Sgt. Leonard’s tenure at Croton he ran the Westchester Police Youth Academy for several years.  The WPYA was a county wide program dedicated to introducing High School students to the law enforcement field. Croton-Harmon HS seniors were able to select the WPYA as their end of year CHOOSE project and in some cases earn college credits. Obviously, TJ enjoys working with young people, which is beneficial to our youth and in turn the entire community.

In addition to his management responsibilities within the police department, Tom is also responsible for our two vessels in the marine unit and the dive team.

In his free time Sgt. Leonard enjoys boating, scuba diving, snow boarding and motorcycling.
