Bicycle Unit Training and Patrol

The Croton on Hudson Police Department’s Bike Patrol Unit plays an important role in law enforcement, public safety and community policing.  The Bike Patrol Unit serves as an additional resource during the warmer months and at special events to bridge the gap between automobile and foot patrol. Allowing increased accessibility to parks, trails and walkways, the officers have the opportunity to be more proactive and interactive with residents. Patrolling on a bicycle allows an officer to slow down and see things he might not see from a car.

Receiving positive feedback from the community, the Bike Patrol’s benefits are apparent in terms of personal contact and interaction with the village youth, residents and businesses.

The Bike Patrol Officers use special equipment, including a recently added e-bike, which allow them to ride in a variety of conditions and terrain. Each officer in the Bicycle Unit undergoes an extensive week- long training program so that they are adept at riding in adverse and challenging conditions.  This includes riding on wet roads, on rough and uneven trails and even up and down stairs which culminates in a 40 mile ride.
