New York State's new seat belt law goes into effect November 1.
Under the new law, all motor vehicle passengers 16 and older must be restrained by a seat belt, whether they are in the front seat or the back seat. The prior law only required seat belts for front-seat passengers.
A statewide seat belt observational survey conducted in June 2018 showed that seat belt use rate was at a historical high of 93%. Despite these gains in usage, roughly 33% of the front-seat occupants killed on New York State roadways are unrestrained. When unbelted back seat occupants killed are included, the total unrestrained killed percentage rises to approximately 37%.
Wear your seat belt - it saves lives!
