Message from Dr. Deborah O’Connell, Superintendent of Croton-Harmon Union Free School District

This email is being shared by the Village as it represents a subject of potentially broad interest to the community. The following is a message from Dr. Deborah O’Connell, Superintendent of Croton-Harmon Union Free School District regarding school ground access during school hours:

 

Dear Community Members:

 

It’s been four weeks since our students returned to the schools for full-time, in-person learning. We continue to be incredibly grateful for all that parents, caregivers and the larger community have done - and continue to do - to create an environment that allows us to minimize COVID cases and protect the well-being of our students, faculty and staff. 

 

As you may be aware, one of the mitigation strategies on which we are relying heavily is to get students outdoors as much as possible. On any given day you can see our students on the school grounds to eat lunch, participate in recess, and attend class. Our outdoor classes are very popular.  We are so fortunate to have such beautiful spaces to do this. At the same time, the reality is that having many students outdoors creates a security challenge for the district.

 

It is not uncommon for community members to be on school grounds as they are enjoying the Village trails adjacent to our property or simply out for a walk.  While we recognize that the Croton community cherishes its time in nature and takes full advantage of the many places to bike and hike in the area, we must ask that citizens avoid entering school property during the school day, which runs from 7:30 AM - 3:15 PM. I have been in contact with the Croton-on-Hudson Village Manager Bryan Healy.  Village Manager Healy shared, “I support the decision of Dr. O’Connell and the school district in the interest of safety for our school-aged children.  I invite all Village and school district residents to make use of our Village recreational facilities, including Croton Landing, the RiverWalk and our neighborhood playgrounds during the school day.”

 

In closing, I want to again express my great appreciation for your understanding on this matter and all that you do to prioritize the safety of our students, faculty and staff.

Estimados miembros de la comunidad:

 

Han pasado cuatro semanas desde que nuestros estudiantes regresaron a las escuelas para el aprendizaje en persona a tiempo completo. Seguimos estando increíblemente agradecidos por todo lo que los padres, los cuidadores y la comunidad en general han hecho, y siguen haciendo, para crear un entorno que nos permita minimizar los casos de COVID y proteger el bienestar de nuestros estudiantes, profesores y personal. 

 

Como ya sabrá, una de las estrategias de mitigación en las que confiamos en gran medida es lograr que los estudiantes estén al aire libre tanto como sea posible. En cualquier día puede ver a nuestros estudiantes en los terrenos de la escuela para almorzar, participar en el recreo y asistir a clases. Nuestras clases al aire libre son muy populares. Somos muy afortunados de tener espacios tan hermosos para hacer esto. Al mismo tiempo, la realidad es que tener muchos estudiantes al aire libre crea un desafío de seguridad para el distrito.

 

No es raro que los miembros de la comunidad estén en los terrenos de la escuela mientras disfrutan de los senderos de Village adyacentes a nuestra propiedad o simplemente salen a caminar. Si bien reconocemos que la comunidad de Croton valora su tiempo en la naturaleza y aprovecha al máximo los muchos lugares para andar en bicicleta y caminar en el área, debemos pedirle a los ciudadanos que eviten ingresar a la propiedad escolar durante el día escolar, que se extiende desde las 7:30 am - 3 : 15pm. Me he puesto en contacto con Bryan Healy, gerente de Croton-on-Hudson Village. El gerente de la aldea, Healy, compartió: “Apoyo la decisión del Dr. O'Connell y del distrito escolar en aras de la seguridad de nuestros niños en edad escolar. Invito a todos los residentes de Village y del distrito escolar a hacer uso de las instalaciones recreativas de Village, que incluyen Croton Landing, RiverWalk y los patios de recreo de nuestro vecindario durante el día escolar.”
