Healthy Living for Your Brain and Body: Tips from the Latest Research

Jessica Flores, of the Hudson Valley Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, offers a presentation designed for the general public. Learn about lifestyle habits that we can adopt at any time in life to help keep our brains and bodies healthy as we age, and possibly delay the onset of cognitive decline. Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge: Where Birds, Horses & People Share

Bill and Carolyn Golden will be presenting their photographs of the birds from the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. They have spent the last 14 years living in Virginia as well as Westchester County. Their dual residency has enabled them to photograph a great number of the birds that inhabit and migrate through the preserve.
 
Mobile Passport Unit Comes to Croton

Mezzo-Soprano Kelly Guerra with Pianist Michael Skelly

Peruvian-American mezzo-soprano Kelly Guerra and classical pianist Michael Skelly return to the Croton Free Library to present a sparkling program, including Peter Lieberson’s “Neruda Songs,” passionate settings of Pablo Neruda’s poetry. Kelly Guerra was most recently noted as a “standout” in the Wall Street Journal for her performance at the Tanglewood Music Center as Mrs. Doc in Leonard Bernstein’s A Quiet Place. Michael Skelly has been a full-time member of the piano faculty at Columbia University for over 30 years. Enjoy an enthralling evening of collaborative music featuring works by Charles Ives, Gustav Mahler, Alma Mahler, and Peter Lieberson, including moving selections especially appropriate for National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15 through October 15).
 
Village-Wide Tag Sale

Music & Fundraiser for Croton River
Saturday, September 21 – 8 PM
The Grandstand
 
Come to the Grandstand on Saturday evening to hear performers including Jon Liebowitz and Dan Pifer from God Street Wine, Dos Belos (Marc Beladino and son Paul Beladino, from the Blue Chips), Tom Stevens, Karen Trendell and The Dude of Life (Steve Pollak). There will be a 50/50 raffle, a craft beer basket and a tap takeover. Funds raised from this event will support the 2020 stewardship program at the Croton River Unique Area.

Rhythm Rising Band Concert

Rhythm Rising Band is a Vibraphone-driven band that plays a wide mix of Latin, Brazilian, World and Jazz music. The band features original music, as well as great classic standards from Jobin, Tito Puente, Cal Tjader and much more. The smooth to fiery sounds are led by Latin great Tomas Martin Lopez. Tickets are $10; kids under 12 are free.

Tamuz Nissim Quartet

Jazz vocalist and rising star Tamuz Nissim appears at Croton Free Library with featured artists – guitarist George Nazos, bassist Harvie S and drummer Tony Jefferson. Tamuz performs alongside some of New York City’s most acclaimed musicians, in clubs like Blue Note, Jazz Forum, The 55 Bar, Cornelia Street and others. Her latest album, “Echo of a Heartbeat,” received rave reviews, made it to the “JazzWeek” charts, and is being played in over a 100 radio stations worldwide. The Tamuz Nissim Quartet performs songs from recent discography – including jazz standards, vocalese, and “originals that are so smart they can bend light” (C. Michael Bailey, “All About Jazz”).

Croton Reservoir & Dam Hike

Easy 2-mile (total) hike north along the Aqueduct and atop the beautiful Croton Dam.  Meet near the restrooms at the parking lot at Croton Gorge Park, Rte. 129, Cortlandt, NY 10567. The leader of the hike will discuss the history and construction of the Old Croton Aqueduct and the features of the Croton Dam, the trailhead of the Aqueduct Trail. Flu Shot Clinic

The professionals of Croton’s local Save Mor Pharmacy bring flu shots to the Ottinger Room of the Croton Free Library. The vaccinations are given to those 6-years-old and over; children under 18 must be accompanied by a parent. Interested parties should drop in during the clinic’s hours with their health insurance cards. In addition, a limited supply of free shots is available to those without insurance – on a first-come-first-served basis. Please direct pharmaceutical questions about the vaccine (for instance, nasal spray delivery or higher doses for seniors) to Save Mor Pharmacy, 914-271-2900.
 
“They Said ‘No’ to Nixon” Presentation

Kirkus Reviews calls author Michael Koncewicz’s recently published work “excruciatingly timely.” They Said ‘No’ to Nixon: Republicans Who Stood Up to the President’s Abuses of Power (University of California Press, 2018) uncovers those within President Richard Nixon’s administration – including his own appointees – who quickly blocked Nixon’s attacks on the IRS, the Justice Department, and other sectors of the federal government. Michael Koncewicz is the Cold War Collections Specialist at the Tamiment Library and Robert F. Wagner Labor Archives at New York University. He previously worked for the National Archives at the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum, where he contributed to the museum’s nonpartisan Watergate exhibit.
