The Croton Free Library presents clarinetist and vocalist Kirsten Mather de Andrade in concert with the musical talents of Sergio Krakowski (pandeiro), Vitor Gonçalves (accordion), Cesar Garabini (guitar), and Eduardo Belo (bass). The ensemble plays “Choro,” a style akin to jazz but not fully improvised, which developed in 19th-century Rio de Janeiro. The group also performs traditional music from the interior and the northeast of Brazil. The afternoon features much of the new music from the album Kirsten is currently recording, entitled “Clarão” (meaning “flash” or “gleam”). An hour prior to the concert, attendees can learn about the music of Brazil through Sergio Krakowski’s pre-concert talk sponsored by the Croton-on-Hudson Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Sergio dedicated his whole life to the pandeiro, also known as the Brazilian tambourine. A complete “hand drum kit”, this instrument has always been considered a symbol of Brazilian music and culture. During the talk, Sergio also relates his personal immigration experience.
