Bennett Conservatory of Music Class Offerings

The Bennet Conservatory of Music, a non-profit community music school, has new offerings for village residents. These classes include electronic music for ages 11 and up, an early childhood music class for those ages 18 months to 4 years and an instrument sampler class for those ages 5 to 7 years. What is Ayurvedic Medicine?

Dr. Somesh N. Kaushik, Ayurvedic and Naturopathic Physician, introduces the principles of Ayurvedic medicine and compares it with Western medicine. Ayurveda defines health as a balance of body, mind and spirit. Discover how your own body constitution (dosha) influences your balance and harmony; ways to determine why and how you might be out of balance; simple things you can do to achieve harmony in your life, and more. Owner and chief medical practitioner of Dr. Kaushik’s Ayurvedic and Naturopathic Clinic in Cross River, N.Y., the presenter is the recipient of the Dhanwantri Award, his profession’s highest honor.

 

The Asylum Cure: Therapeutic Architecture in the 19th Century

Presented by the Croton Friends of History. Historical insane asylums are often portrayed as sites of abuse and neglect but their architects envisioned them as curative instruments, attributing therapeutic properties to the style and arrangement of architecture. This presentation explores how 19th-century asylums were designed to cure mental illness, and how patient experiences were shaped by this therapeutic environment. Madeline Kearin is a PhD candidate in archaeology at Brown University with a Master's degree in Art History and Archaeology from N.Y.U. Her doctoral dissertation examines the construction and administration of the 19th-century asylum as a therapeutic environment at the Worcester State Hospital in Massachusetts.

 

Second Saturday Bird Walk

The monthly second Saturday walks at Brinton Brook continue year-round. No registration needed. Rain or shine. Meet in main parking area. Good for adults and young people age 8 and up. Held regardless of weather except in cases of severe weather or road closures. Check the online Google calendar at www.sawmillriveraudubon.org if any question about severe weather cancellation.

Come ID and count birds at the bird feeders at Croton Point Nature Center with volunteers from Saw Mill River Audubon viewing the feeders from inside the Center. Beginners encouraged. Croton Reads: Meet the Author

Discuss who Lorraine Hansberry was and what she worked toward in her brief life with Imani Perry, author of our Croton Reads 2019 selection, Looking for Lorraine. Imani Perry will visit the Library on Sunday, March 10th. The author presentation and Q&A will begin at 2:00 p.m. followed by a book signing. Books will be available for purchase before and after the event. Tickets Required.

 

Care for Creation Screening of Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power"

A decade after An Inconvenient Truth (2006) brought climate change to the heart of popular culture, this follow-up movie shows just how close we are to a real energy revolution and/or massive unpredictable outcomes. Woodcock Walk at Croton Point

Gather with the Saw Mill River Audubon Society in the ball field parking lot just inside Croton Point Park. Walk over to the landfill edge to listen and look for American Woodcock which *may* be doing spring display flights. Best for adults and older youth. Not a field trip for kids younger than 8, please. Bring binoculars and flashlights. Temps below 40 or high winds will cancel.

 

Green Living Series: Wasted! The Story of Food Waste

Exposes the criminality of food waste and how it’s directly contributing to climate change and shows us how each of us can make small changes – all of them delicious – to solve one of the greatest problems of the 21st century. The screening begins promptly at 7 p.m. and a discussion and refreshments to follow. The Green Living Series is brought to you by a partnership between the Croton Conservation Advisory Council and Teatown.

“Caring for the Caregiver” with Pam Cardozo

Attention caregivers: Are you feeling tired and drained most of the day? Do you feel like nothing you do is appreciated? Is most of your day spent on mind-dulling or overwhelming tasks? Do you feel angry and resentful in your caregiving role? If you can answer “yes” to any of these questions, join Croton resident Pam Cardozo for her presentation, “Caring for the Caregiver.” Pam discusses the signs, symptoms and causes of caregiver stress and burnout; ways to prevent it; where to turn for help. A registered nurse and certified life coach, Pam has a lifetime of experience as a psychiatric nurse, educator in geriatrics, hospital director of volunteers, and hospital patient advocate.

From the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers the Whos. Book Discussion with Joi Gresham, Hansberry’s Literary Trustee

The library, as part of the Croton Reads program this year, has included Lorraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun and autobiographical anthology To Be Young Gifted and Black as additional reading AND a special appearance on Sunday, March 17th at 2:00 p.m. by Joi Gresham, Hansberry’s Literary Trustee, former Croton resident and the daughter of Jewell Handy Gresham and Robert Nemiroff. She will discuss, “Lorraine Hansberry: A Living Legacy” and speak with the audience. Tickets Required.

Bennett Talks: "Writing Young Vilna" with Washington D.C. pianist and composer Jessica Krash. Jessica visited Lithuania in 2016 to study Yiddish, to learn about her grandfather's

history and, to seek musical inspiration. She will talk about her choral work "Writing Young Vilna" the creative result of her trip. Wine and cheese reception to follow.
