Bennett Conservatory of Music Class Offerings

Ongoing Event

The Bennet Conservatory of Music, a non-profit community music school, has new offerings for village residents. These classes include electronic music for ages 11 and up, an early childhood music class for those ages 18 months to 4 years and an instrument sampler class for those ages 5 to 7 years. “Caring for the Caregiver” with Pam Cardozo

Attention caregivers: Are you feeling tired and drained most of the day? Do you feel like nothing you do is appreciated? Is most of your day spent on mind-dulling or overwhelming tasks? Do you feel angry and resentful in your caregiving role? If you can answer “yes” to any of these questions, join Croton resident Pam Cardozo for her presentation, “Caring for the Caregiver.” Pam discusses the signs, symptoms and causes of caregiver stress and burnout; ways to prevent it; where to turn for help. A registered nurse and certified life coach, Pam has a lifetime of experience as a psychiatric nurse, educator in geriatrics, hospital director of volunteers, and hospital patient advocate.

 

Musical Auditions – Seussical Jr.

Open to grades 4-9. Our favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life in this fantastical musical extravaganza from Tony-winners, Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty. From the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus, the Cat in the Hat narrates the story of Horton the Elephant, who discovers the Whos. Project FeederWatch

Saturday-Sunday, March 16-17 – 9 to 11 AM

Croton Point Nature Center

Come ID and count birds at the bird feeders at Croton Point Nature Center with volunteers from Saw Mill River Audubon viewing the feeders from inside the Center. Beginners encouraged. Book Discussion with Joi Gresham, Hansberry’s Literary Trustee

The library, as part of the Croton Reads program this year, has included Lorraine Hansberry’s play A Raisin in the Sun and autobiographical anthology To Be Young Gifted and Black as additional reading AND a special appearance on Sunday, March 17th at 2:00 p.m. by Joi Gresham, Hansberry’s Literary Trustee, former Croton resident and the daughter of Jewell Handy Gresham and Robert Nemiroff. She will discuss, “Lorraine Hansberry: A Living Legacy” and speak with the audience. Tickets Required.

Bennett Talks: "Writing Young Vilna" with Washington D.C. pianist and composer Jessica Krash. Jessica visited Lithuania in 2016 to study Yiddish, to learn about her grandfather's history and, to seek musical inspiration. She will talk about her choral work "Writing Young Vilna" the creative result of her trip. Wine and cheese reception to follow.

 

Antarctica - Ice and Millions of Penguins, but No Bears

Hosted by the Saw Mill River Audubon Society. In November 2018, Phil and Ellen Heidelberger traveled with National Geographic and Lindblad to explore the Falklands, South Georgia Island and the Antarctic Peninsula by ship, zodiac, kayak and snowshoes. Come see Phil's images of stunning landscapes of ice, eight species of penguins, Elephant and Leopard Seals, whales and other wildlife and hear stories from their journey.

 

Zoning Update Public Workshop

The Village is considering updating the zoning for the Municipal Place Gateway (the three retail areas near Maple Street and Municipal Place) and the North Riverside Avenue Corridor with a view to enhancing the vitality of the area. Please attend the workshop at the Harmon Firehouse to learn more about the study that will be conducted, the process behind it, and provide your input.
 

Beloved Community Dinner: How to Have Civil Conversations

Please join the Croton community for a pot luck meal and guided discussion. Based on a model developed by The Rev. Doris Dalton at the MLK Institute in White Plains, these dinners reflect The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s vision for “Beloved Community, an inclusive and reconciled reality that recognizes and affirms the humanity in each other.” Please bring food to share and your own plate/utensils if possible. Croton Reservoir & Dam Hike

Saturday, March 23 – 10 AM

Croton Gorge Park

Easy 2-mile hike north along the Aqueduct and atop the beautiful Croton Dam.  Meet near the restrooms at the parking lot at Croton Gorge Park, Rte. 129, Cortlandt, NY 10567. The leader of the hike will discuss the history and construction of the Old Croton Aqueduct and the features of the Croton Dam, the trailhead of the Aqueduct Trail.  The Aqueduct was completed in 1842 to supply water to a thirsty New York City. Homegrown String Band in Concert

The Homegrown String Band brings an American folk tradition into the 21st century. This family of musicians collaborates to develop an “organically grown” repertoire of original and roots music inspired by the classic sounds of rural America. The Jackofsky family (husband, wife, daughter) trio uses a full palette of instruments – including guitar, banjo, dulcimer, mandolin, banjo ukulele, baritone ukulele, harmonica and doumbek – to take the audience on a musical journey from ancient ballads of the British Isles to contemporary blues and bluegrass.
