The Songs of Scotland with Peter Walker

Sunday, March 3 – 3 PM

Scotland was home to a vibrant musical culture in the 18th century, from the songs of Robert Burns to the Gaelic piping of the Highlands. A flourishing music publishing industry in Edinburgh produced numerous collections of instrumental music and songs. Peter Walker presents a program of pieces from these collections, ranging from songs of Jacobites and Highland regiments to pastoral love songs and traditional ballads, as well as piping tunes played on a replica of a set of smallpipes dated to 1757. Peter has been described as a “rich-voiced” and “vivid” singer in a New York Times review, and an “impressive” and “exciting” piper by clevelandclassical.com.

The Asylum Cure: Therapeutic Architecture in the 19th Century

Thursday, March 7 – 7 PM

Historical insane asylums are often portrayed as sites of abuse and neglect but their architects envisioned them as curative instruments, attributing therapeutic properties to the style and arrangement of architecture. This presentation explores how 19th-century asylums were designed to cure mental illness, and how patient experiences were shaped by this therapeutic environment. Madeline Kearin is a PhD candidate in archaeology at Brown University with a Master's degree in Art History and Archaeology from N.Y.U. Her doctoral dissertation examines the construction and administration of the 19th-century asylum as a therapeutic environment at the Worcester State Hospital in Massachusetts.
