The Power of Plant-Based Nutrition

Wednesday, April 17 – 7:30 PM

Croton Free Library

Presenter Janet Levine, a registered dietitian and dentist, shares her fascination with the effects of good nutrition on health. Janet explains how whole foods and common spices can prevent and reverse such problems as diabetes, and heart and gastrointestinal disease. A plant-based diet is also chosen by many athletes to achieve maximum performance. Janet demonstrates how to make one of many possible nutrition-packed dishes with delicious ingredients. An interactive performance by Marcy B. Freedman, the artist is inviting members of the public to sit and chat with her about a work on view. The duration of each one-on-one conversation will be determined by the participant. At the conclusion of each encounter, the lucky person will be gifted with a very special surprise.

 

Bird Walk

Come birding with the Saw Mill River Audubon Society! Birders should meet in the main parking lot. Beginners encouraged; no RSVP needed. Walks are held rain or shine! Goddess Bracelet Making with Judy

Tuesday, April 23 – 3:30 to 5 PM

Come spend an afternoon at the Croton Free Library and make a goddess bracelet. It’s easy for beginners and no experience necessary. Great way to get into beading for someone who would like to get started. All materials are included. For tweens, teens and adults. Registration required.

Join the Village and the Tree Committee of the Conservation Advisory Council in celebrating Arbor Day! Trees will be planted along the Benedict Blvd. islands.

 

Botanic Garden, by Todd Logan

In Botanic Garden — a funny, poignant drama — Kate Goodman, a widow, is desperate to get out of a first date. She turns to the one person who can help: her deceased husband, Jake. Botanic Garden is an inventively constructed portrait of an imperfect marriage between people who always loved each other, even when they didn’t get along. Todd Logan’s heartwarming play charms audiences with the intricacies of a long-term relationship: the trials and joys, the loss and renewal. Starring veteran actors Karen Quinn-Panzer and Frank Panzer, the play is brought to the library by M&M Performing Arts Company.

 

Croton River to Croton Point – A Hudson River Microcosm

The second environmental education seminar hosted by the Croton Yacht Club. These events are free of charge and open to the public. Scott Craven will be discussing the history and ecological importance of the local Hudson River watershed from the Croton River to Croton Point and explain how this microcosm is representative of the greatest river in the world. Scott has lived along the banks of the Hudson River his entire life and is a boater, avid fly fisherman, hiker, historian and associate member of the Croton Yacht Club.

 

National Drug Take Back Day

The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications.

 

Croton Reservoir & Dam Hike

Saturday, April 27 – 10 AM

Croton Gorge Park

Easy 2-mile hike north along the Aqueduct and atop the beautiful Croton Dam.  Meet near the restrooms at the parking lot at Croton Gorge Park, Rte. 129, Cortlandt, NY 10567. The leader of the hike will discuss the history and construction of the Old Croton Aqueduct and the features of the Croton Dam, the trailhead of the Aqueduct Trail.  The Aqueduct was completed in 1842 to supply water to a thirsty New York City. Up in Arms Presents “Tortoise & Hare’s Race to Health”

On your mark, get set, read! That’s what Benjamin Booksmart does to help his friend Terrence the Tortoise as he prepares for another race with Henry the Hare. Inspired by Aesop’s famous fable, the show features a cast of colorful, fun puppet friends who engage the entire audience through interactive songs and movement. Ideal for ages 3 through 8.

 

Demystifying Medicare and Healthcare Coverage for Seniors

This presentation from Westchester Seniors Out Speaking (a project of the Westchester Library System) informs and guides those trying to navigate their way through our complicated healthcare system for older adults. Whether you already have Medicare, or are planning your retirement and contemplating healthcare coverage, this engaging, interactive program helps outline your options and future costs. Retirement Income Planning - Social Security Tips to Retire Happy

Wednesday, May 1 – 7:30 PM

Paul Petrone, a local CFP, CPA, discusses the factors to consider in deciding how and when (age 62, full-retirement or 70) to claim Social Security. He outlines the seven most common Social Security mistakes and how to claim spousal and survivor benefits. Information is most pertinent to those ages 60 to 70, no matter what their marital status. Register.
