New York’s African American Burial Ground

Sunday, April 14 – 1 PM

Croton Point Nature Center

From about the 1690’s until 1794, both free and enslaved Africans were buried in a 6.6-acre burial ground in Lower Manhattan, outside the boundaries of the settlement of New Amsterdam, later known as New York. Lost to history due to landfill and development, the grounds were rediscovered in 1991 by archaeologists as a consequence of the planned construction of a Federal office building. In all, 419 bodies were discovered – giving a clue to how many others still lie under the foundations of Lower Manhattan (estimated have ranged from 10,000 to 20,000). Information on the physical/forensic, social, economic, ritual and other aspects of the interred enslaved population of colonial New York, as well as that of the period’s buried freemen and other marginal peoples, were revealed by the archaeological investigations. This presentation is hosted by the L.A. Brennan Lower Hudson Chapter of the NYS Archaeological Association and free to the public. For more information, visit www.lablhc.org.
