Half Moon Bay Bridge FAQ
What is the Half Moon Bay Bridge?
The Half Moon Bay Bridge is the span that carries Half Moon Bay Drive over the Metro-North Railroad tracks. Originally a bridge used to carry trains into the rail yards, it was repurposed in 1987 for vehicular and pedestrian use as part of the development of the Half Moon Bay Condominiums. The Village took ownership of the bridge in 1996.
Is the bridge safe?
Yes. The bridge is periodically inspected by the New York State Dept. of Transportation (NYSDOT) through its bridge safety program. Recent inspection reports from NYSDOT have found that the bridge is currently structurally sound but has some deficiencies that require attention. These include addressing the bridge joints, replacement of the concrete deck and cleaning and recoating of the existing steel support structures.
Why is this project a priority?
The Half Moon Bay Bridge is a vital piece of infrastructure as it provides the only public vehicular access to the waterfront, including the RiverWalk, Senasqua Park, Croton Yacht Club and Croton Landing Park. The bridge spans the Metro-North Railroad Hudson Line and any failure of the bridge span or its components could severely impact rail traffic (including Amtrak). Addressing the noted deficiencies is essential to ensuing the long-term safety and reliability of the bridge.
What is the project timeline?
It is anticipated that the project will go out to public bid in summer 2026, with construction starting in December 2026. The project is expected to be completed in March 2028. The schedule reflects the need for close coordination with Metro-North Railroad.
Will the bridge be open during construction?
Yes, the goal is to maintain one lane of traffic over the bridge at all times during construction. Alternating traffic will be controlled through the use of a temporary stop light, flaggers or other methods. There may be times during construction that require a temporary full closure, which will be communicated in advance.
Will the bike/walking path underneath the bridge be affected?
No, the current plans provide for the bike/walking path to remain open during construction. Safety measures will be provided to protect path users.
How is this project being funded?
The Village has received an earmark from the U.S. Congress in the amount of $1,500,000 to be used towards the rehabilitation of the bridge. Previously, the Village took out a serial bond in the amount of $500,000 for this project.
Will the bridge footprint or roadway change?
No. The project will maintain the existing bridge framework and roadway footprint.
What happens if the contractor needs to store equipment near the project site?
The Village has identified an area in the parking lot adjacent to the RiverWalk that can be used to store equipment. If private property is needed, a separate agreement between the property owner and contractor would be negotiated.
How might summer entertainment at Senasqua Park or sports at Croton Landing be affected?
The Village is exploring traffic management options, such as deploying police officers for traffic control, to minimize impacts and maintain efficient access during events.
What if I have questions on this project?
