Door-to-Door Soliciting

Peddling and soliciting in the Village of Croton-on-Hudson is governed by Chapter 172 of the Village Code known as "Commercial Soliciting".

 

A permit is needed when an individual is:

 

(1)       Requesting, either directly or indirectly, money, credit, funds, contributions, personal property or anything of value;

 

(2)      Taking or attempting to take orders for the sale of any goods, wares, merchandise or services of any kind, or description for future delivery or for services to be performed in the future, either in person or by distributing printed material; and

 

(3)      Selling and making immediate delivery of any goods, wares, merchandise or services of any kind or description.

 

The permit application is available on the Village website.

Children under the age of 18 soliciting/peddling on behalf of an organization (e.g., selling cookies for the Girl Scouts, candy for a school fundraiser, etc.) are exempt from the permit requirements. Political and religious canvassing activities are also exempt from the permit requirements. A full list of exemptions can be found in the Village Code.

 

Permits MUST be in possession of every peddler or solicitor at all times when peddling or soliciting and shall be displayed upon request by any person.

If a solicitor does not have a permit, please call the Police Department non-emergency line at 914-271-5177 and contact the Village Clerk’s office at 914-271-2013 with any information you have about the solicitor.

Within the Village of Croton-on-Hudson, soliciting or peddling door to door is allowed between the hours of 9 a.m. and 8 p.m.

 

Residents are permitted to post a “No Soliciting” sign on their property, which solicitors and peddlers are required to observe.
