Adopt-A-Highway Program Opportunity

adopt a highway

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has informed the Village that permits for the Adopt-A-Highway program are available for Route 129. The Adopt-A-Highway program is a volunteer initiative that allows businesses, organizations, and individuals to adopt a section of state highway for the purpose of keeping it clean and litter-free.

Who Can Adopt a New York State Highway?

Any business or organization may adopt a highway. On occasion, individuals or families adopt highways. The New York State Department of Transportation welcomes civic, fraternal, service, youth, senior citizen, scout, school, church, synagogue and neighborhood organizations.

What Must Adopters Do?

Adopters are asked to commit to picking up litter along their adopted section of the state highway, typically around two miles long, at least four times a year for two years. Formal agreements with NYSDOT are required, and adopters must obtain a Highway Work Permit from NYSDOT when conducting cleanups (fees are waived).
