Public Works

The Department of Public Works is responsible for the overall operation and maintenance of the Village’s public infrastructure. The Department is split into several operating divisions: Highway, Sanitation, Building Maintenance, Water, Parks, and the Repair Facility (garage).  DPW also supports multiple Village functions during the year including Summerfest, Earth Day, Eagle Fest, and the Harry Chapin Hunger Run.

Administration

Public Works Administration provides direction and oversight of the operating divisions, public interaction, budget preparation, file maintenance, program coordination and control, personnel management and fiscal management.

Building Maintenance

Performs necessary repairs and preventative maintenance to the Village’s fourteen (14) primary facilities and ancillary structures under Village ownership.

Highway

The Highway Division provides traditional public works functions including snow and ice control on approximately 31 centerline miles of roadway, collection of approximately 1,200 tons of fall leaves and yard debris, maintenance and repair of 27.5 miles of sanitary sewers, and 768 sanitary sewer manholes.  Highway is also responsible for cleaning catch basins; street sweeping; inspecting drainage infrastructure, maintenance and repair of street lights, maintenance and repair of traffic signals, maintaining storm water utility structures, trimming and removing damaged Village owned trees, installation and maintenance of street signs, and repairing roadway potholes.

Parks

The Parks Division performs daily maintenance, renovations and upgrades to the Village’s ten (10) primary parks.  They are responsible for lawn maintenance, tree care, field maintenance, supporting special events during the year (summer concerts, movie nights, lunch with the Bunny, etc.), coordinating with various athletic groups (little league, soccer, softball, etc.), supporting summer camp groups, interaction with the beautification committee, general park cleanups (litter and debris), leaf removal within Village parks, and kayak/canoe launch support.

Repair Facility (Central Garage)

The Repair Facility is responsible for ensuring that all motorized and non-motorized vehicles, apparatus, and equipment within the Village’s fleet are operational.  This includes vehicles in the Police Department, Fire Department, Village administrative staff, and the DPW.

Sanitation

The Sanitation Division is responsible for the removal of solid waste, co-mingled recyclables, paper products, recyclable metal, and approved electronics from residential locations within the Village.

Water

The Water Department provides drinking water to the Village (refer to the Village’s Annual Water Quality Report for system facts and figures).  The department’s responsibilities include the monitoring and operation of the Village well system, providing required water samples to regulating agencies, reading residential meters for billing purposes, bi-annual flushing of all fire hydrants, performing all code 753 mark-outs, and meeting with Village residents to address questions/concerns regarding their water service.
