Independence Day Message from the Mayor

Dear Neighbors:

On July 4th, 1776, the Continental Congress declared our independence and created our country on the revolutionary basis of liberty and equality. On the Fourth of July, we are grateful for the blessings of that freedom and for the opportunities that it affords.

From Concord to Normandy and from Little Rock to Selma, brave Americans have risked their lives to make freedom a reality. We are humbled in remembering the many courageous men and women--in uniform and out--who have served and sacrificed throughout our history to preserve, protect, and expand our liberties.

In the nearly two and a half centuries since our country’s founding, our republic has transformed itself from a colonial backwater to a strong & prosperous democracy. Our country, composed of citizens with origins in every corner of the earth, has achieved things beyond the imagination of our founders.

Not least of these achievements is the historically quick development of the COVID-19 vaccines--made with key contributions by scientists and business people who previously immigrated to the United States--which have saved countless lives and once again made it possible to safely gather with family & friends.

The experience of the last year-and-a-half, dominated by a pandemic that has sickened and killed neighbors, friends and family, gives added meaning to this year’s July 4th. Today invites us all to reflect on the simple joys our freedom makes possible.

On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I wish a happy & safe Independence Day to all and extend our deepest gratitude to the members of the armed forces, first responders and essential workers who continue to serve our community over this long weekend.

Sincerely,

Brian Pugh
