Birds and Beasts of the Galapagos and the Rainforests of Ecuador

Saw Mill River Audubon Society members Lynn and John Salmon spent June 2019 hiking, snorkeling, kayaking, cruising and photographing the Galapagos, the Andean cloud forest and the Amazonian rainforest of Ecuador. Come see their photos of boobies, tortoises, iguanas, hummingbirds, anteaters, monkeys and other wildlife. Hear tales of Darwin's finches, giant daisies, volcanoes, whales, sea lions, and even a real-life murder mystery in the Enchanted Islands.
 
Asbury Church Holiday Pop-Up
Friday-Saturday, October 18-19 – 10 AM to 3 PM (Fri & Sat)

Due to the success of the Holidays Pop-Up last year, Asbury Church has extended them to include Halloween and Thanksgiving decorations. Come and purchase ‘gently-used’ holiday [Fall, Halloween and Thanksgiving] decorations, tableware, costumes, indoor plants and baked goods. Also consider donating your unneeded holiday items – Halloween, Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas, New Years, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, Birthdays. There is a donation drop-off box in the church glass breezeway hall or stop by when the shop is open. The Pop-Up Shop is part of Asbury Church’s efforts for reducing people’s impact on the environment through recycling.
 
Daffodil Day

Join the Croton Conservation Advisory Council at the 19th Annual Daffodil Day. The planting is done in memory of the victims of the September 11th terrorist attacks. Those interested in helping to plant should meet on the islands of Benedict Blvd.
 
Demystifying Medicare for Seniors

This presentation is perfect for anyone trying to navigate their way through our complicated healthcare system for older adults. It will help those who already have Medicare, as well as people soon to be 65, planning retirement or assisting relatives with their medical decisions. This program is free, but registration is required. Please call the Recreation Department at 271-3006 for more information.

39th Annual Harry Chapin Memorial Run Against Hunger

The annual Run Against Run is scheduled for October 20. Registration for the run can be done online at www.runagainsthunger.com or in-person on race day. Proceeds from the event benefit many organizations including the Croton-Cortlandt Food Pantry and the Croton Caring Committee.
 
“All in a Day’s Work” with Soprano Laura Stelman Jaeger and Pianist Mark C. Mitchell

At home with both opera and Broadway, Croton-on-Hudson’s own Laura Stelman Jaeger offers “a cabaret of career confessions.” Laura, who received her Bachelor’s Degree from the Manhattan School of Music and her Master’s from Indiana University, is joined by fellow Croton resident, pianist Mark C. Mitchell. Mark has been the music director, conductor and/or pianist for well over 50 Broadway, off-Broadway, national tour and regional productions. Come to Laura’s home library for a fall afternoon of favorites from Rodgers and Hammerstein, Stephen Sondheim, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Kander and Ebb, Stephen Schwartz — as well as the music of up-and-coming theater composers, Rachel J. Peters and Michael R. Jackson.
 
Tour the Fall Sky
Thursday, October 24 – 7 PM

Take a tour of the fall sky this month with members of the Westchester Amateur Astronomers club. We’ll view stars, constellations, nebulae, and The Milky Way with telescopes on the lawn. Learn the legends of some of our fall constellations passed down by Native American, Greek, and Roman civilizations. (Rain date: October 28.) Registration Required.
 
Goblin Walk
Saturday, October 26 – Noon

All goblins, creatures and spirits will meet at the Municipal Building at noon and march to Vassallo Park. Young and old are invited. Some tricks and treats will be waiting for everyone at the park. In case of rain, the Goblin Walk will be relocated to an indoor site. Don’t miss this exciting event! Please, no dogs in parade! Judging categories include: Best Overall Boy Costume, Best Overall Girl Costume, Scariest, Most Creative, and Best Family Theme. Judging will be announced at the end of our program!
 
CET PTA Fall Festival

Join the CET PTA for their annual Fall Festival! There will be local food vendors, crafts with the Girl Scouts, carnival booths/games, bouncy house/slides and much more! There will be live entertainment from Croton's own Adam Auslander and balloon decor from the Westchester Balloon Company! Come in costume and get a door prize. It's sure to be a frighteningly good time!
 
Leave the Leaves Demonstration

Join members of the Conservation Advisory Council’s Tree Committee as they explain and demonstrate the practice of leaf mulching. Homeowners and landscapers are invited to see how leaves can be mulched, chopped, composted and more. You can also visit www.leaveleavesalone.org to learn more.
 
Croton Reservoir & Dam Hike

Easy 2-mile (total) hike north along the Aqueduct and atop the beautiful Croton Dam. Meet near the restrooms at the parking lot at Croton Gorge Park. The leader of the hike will discuss the history and construction of the Old Croton Aqueduct and the features of the Croton Dam, the trailhead of the Aqueduct Trail. “Clarão,” Brazilian Music with Kristen Mather de Andrade

The Croton Free Library presents clarinetist and vocalist Kirsten Mather de Andrade in concert with the musical talents of Sergio Krakowski (pandeiro), Vitor Gonçalves (accordion), Cesar Garabini (guitar), and Eduardo Belo (bass). The ensemble plays “Choro,” a style akin to jazz but not fully improvised, which developed in 19th-century Rio de Janeiro. The group also performs traditional music from the interior and the northeast of Brazil. The afternoon features much of the new music from the album Kirsten is currently recording, entitled “Clarão” (meaning “flash” or “gleam”). An hour prior to the concert, attendees can learn about the music of Brazil through Sergio Krakowski’s pre-concert talk sponsored by the Croton-on-Hudson Diversity and Inclusion Committee. Sergio dedicated his whole life to the pandeiro, also known as the Brazilian tambourine. A complete “hand drum kit”, this instrument has always been considered a symbol of Brazilian music and culture. During the talk, Sergio also relates his personal immigration experience.

“Money Matters: Everything You Should Have Learned in School, But Didn’t” with Veronica Karas

Passionate about helping individuals make financially sound decisions, author Veronica Karas has made it her mission to equip people with the tools necessary to navigate through difficult economic times. Veronica offers an educational presentation on ways to take control of personal finances, including how to maximize your savings so they are effective and efficient and the basics of investing and how it all relates to your financial future. A certified financial planner, Veronica currently works for Captrust, and during this talk shares her expertise without obligation. Veronica published her book – Money Matters: Everything You Should Have Learned in School, But Didn’t – in February 2019.
